Note: Censuses before 1850 only show name of head of household, other household members names not shown; they are enumerated by sex/age. Censuses before 1850 provide less and less information as they go further back. There is no 1890 federal census, I believe it was lost in a fire. However there are sometimes state/territory censuses available such as the 1890 Oklahoma Territory census. Censuses after 1930 have not been released yet.
To make it easier for visitors to navigate this page I'm going to split these records into 4 groups based on my Grandparents.

GreatX4 Grandfather Samuel and GreatX3 Grandfather Jesse Hanna lived just a few farms away from each other. See the Misc. Hanna documents section of the webpage to view land grants from Vermillion County.
Note that in all of these censuses the age groups in which Samuel is listed indicate that he was born in the 1770s.
Many researchers have him listed as being born in the 1750s. I have always felt that to be incorrect because it is well documented that he married GreatX4 Grandmother Mary Cassidy in the late 1790s and that she was a minor at the time. It would have been very unusual for a man to be a bachelor into his 40s and then marry a 17 year old girl back in those days. The 1810 census may solve the riddle why many researchers believe him to have the middle initial “C”, in the 1810 census the name Samuel is abbreviated as “Sam.l” with the lower case “l” written slightly above the line. That lower case “l” sort of looks like a capital “C”. If you look at other Samuels in that Floyd Co. census you will see this same abbreviation used many times. That census taker also liked to abbreviate Benjamin as “Benj.a”; both abbreviations may have been normal usage for 1810.

In none of the documents that I have found for Samuel has there been another instance of a middle initial being used. Not in his land grants, his marriage records, his church membership listing and the other censuses.
