Judge David Seth Hanna ( b:1828 d:1905 )
Below is a transcript of Judge David S. Hanna's family history copied verbatim from the much xeroxed copy that I have. The history was compiled from 1899 to 1905 by Judge David S. Hanna of Cherokee Texas. He was approx. 72 years old at the time he started work on the history. Judge David S. Hanna was the brother of my Great Great Grandfather Robert Milton Hanna There are several errors in this work but on the whole I feel that it is a real treasure! To avoid any misunderstandings I will state here that I believe Judge Hanna was wrong on several key pieces of information. First, I believe that Judge Hanna was working from memory; putting down on paper names, dates and events as he or other members of the family remembered them. I base this belief on the fact that Judge Hanna lists absolutely no supporting documentation ( family bibles, wills, etc. ). In my opinion the gravest error in his work is that he names his Great Grandfather as Ebineezer rather than Samuel Sr., the name which I believe to be correct. It is my opinion that he got his Great Grandfather confused with either his Great Uncle or Great Great Uncle. If you prefer to believe that the name Ebineezer is indeed correct you certainly have every right to do so, but I ask that you contact me if you have documentation to support this ( other than this work or works based on this one ). Judge Hanna also states that Rev. Samuel Hanna was born in 1756, I feel that this is highly unlikely given that Rev. Hanna married Mary Cassidy in 1796 ( not 1790 as stated by Judge Hanna ). It would have been very unusual in those days for a man to wait until age 40 to marry, especially to a young woman of around 17 or 18. As no previous marriages for Rev. Hanna are known a more likely year of birth for him would be somewhere between 1772 and 1776. I also believe that some of the stories the Judge relates in his work regarding our family's relationship with notable historic figures of the day were probably tall tales he was told by his elders. I will state here that I believe Judge Hanna's claims of our kinship to revolutionary war hero David Williams are baseless, as well as the claim that his Grandfather Hanna had been with Daniel Boone during Mr. Boone's early exploration of Kentucky. I have researched these claims and can find absolutely no evidence or documentation to corroborate either of them. I have, however, found reasons to seriously doubt them. The time frame is off by at least 20 years in the case of Daniel Boone and in the case of Revolutionary War hero David Williams the geographical locations are wrong. Revolutionary War hero David Williams is well documented as having lived in the New York area and our John Williams as being in South Carolina. Again it is certainly your right to believe Judge Hanna's claims but again I ask that you contact me and share your documentation. There are also several smaller mistakes in the work such as names, dates and locations being wrong. Because of this I would request that you NOT quote this work as a reference unless you have additional documentation that matches the information here. I will try to duplicate the formatting of the text as closely as I can ( columns, indentation, etc. ). Because of this some parts will be harder to read. I will also duplicate spelling and punctuation as closely as possible, in cases where the original text is illegible I will note that accordingly. If you have in your posession a clearer copy of the text that can be used to fill in the areas marked illegible I would be very grateful for a copy of that text. Words or letters from words missing from the text are added within [ brackets ]. Please note: I do not know how closely this text matches Judge Hanna's original as it is based on an earlier transcription made by an unknown family researcher. You may notice some duplication of information, It's possible that Judge Hanna might have started two drafts of the work and that they were combined later. It also seems that the Williams text and the Hanna text may have originally been meant to be separate volumes. And lastly, the order of the pages here may not be right because I am copying the text as I have received it. Please e-mail me at...

In about A D 1682, some members of an ancient family by the name of Williams came to America from Ireland and settled some where in or near Charleston South Carolina, in 1782. We find Two Brothers, namely John Williams and David Williams the same young Williams who assisted in the capture of Major Andre, while trying to make his escape by land from West Point, after his deal with General Arnold, here I loose sight of him. 2d John Williams brother of said David Williams was married to a noble woman, and they raised up a large family of noble sons and daughters by name as follows to wit, 1 Son John H. Williams born about 1775, married his first wife Elizabeth Bruton 1798. She bore him two children as follows. 1st A son David S. born Morgan Co. Ky 1800 2d A daughter, Elizabeth, born Morgan County Kantucky Dec. 22, 1805. Elizabeth wife of said John H. Williams and mother of David S. and Elizabeth died in Morgan County K***

John Williams Sr. --Children of this ancestor Born to him by his wife, John H. Williams David Williams Mason Williams Isaac Williams 1.st In about 1682, among the emigrants then coming to collonies in America from the old Country there were some members of an ancient and honorable family known by the name Williams, left their ancient home in one of the Ancient Cities situated somewhere in Ireland and arriving in America with their families settled at or in the vacinity of Charleston South Carolina and raised up large and prosperous families, who spread out into many of the new settlements and colonies, during the 17th Centaury. The Christian names of these Ancestors have not been handed down to us in regular order, But tradition has informed us, that in some time in the 17 Centaury there was Born to one of the Williams families two sons the name of the eldest son was called John and the younger brother was named David. And John married a noble woman and rais[e]d a large family of children and come to and settled with a part of his family in the blue grass region in Kantucky, where in an early day he associated with Daniel Boon the noted fronteersman, here John Williams settled on the Sanday River, where remained until he died in old age.

David Williams Brother to John as before stated is the same David Williams named as one of the three men who Captured Major Andre, while on his way over land from West Point to New York, after closing his deal with General Arnold, for the surrender of the Army at that place, believing that at the same time it would result in the capture of the beloved General Washington and thus end the great war for independence of these United Colonies, of this David Williams our family has failed to keep a record of his family, so we must leave him here and take up the other branch of this family.

David S. Hanna married Martha Jane youngest child of Lewis & Martha Jane Jones, Washington Co. Ark Come to Williamson Co. Tex Oct 1850. Moved to Brown Co. Settled in Hanna Valley on the Colorado River in Oct 1856, at the place now known as Regency, then 20 miles above any settlement on the Colorado River. here at this Ranch, their daughter Josephine was born, the first white child born on the Colorado, above Pecan Bayo, etc.-- David S. Hanna was at the first election 1857 held in Brown Co. and was a member of the first Gra[n]d Jury ever organized in Brown County, Tex, the Indians becoming very troublesom[e] he joined a Ranging Company Sept 1858, under Capt John Williams and made an excursion with 20 men to the plains, in 1859 on the head waters of Colorado and Brazos, to find where the Indian villages were located, but sickness of some of the men caused them to return
- page 42 -
without finding a village, 1861 he in company with a few citizens pursued a company of 20 Indians, who had stolen Horses in the valley, over taken them in the ruff mountains west of the Pecan Bayo Bridge, and there a desperate fight came off, in which one man Owen Lindsey was killed, Andrew Jones & George Robbins severely wounded and some others slightly wounded. My hors[e] was killed and others wounded, we killed one or two Indians and wounded others but our force being inadequet raw citizens, in the most part of them had never seen an Indian, and were very poorly armed, did no fighting. We recaptured our horses and the Indian camp and plunder and held them, but the Indians carried off their dead & wounded. In August 1862 D. S. Hanna moved his family to Cherokee San Saba Co. Tex. and in connection with Capt John Williams and others entered and engaged in the Beef se[r]vice Confederate States, gathered a thousand fine fat beaves to be deliv[er]ed at Little Rock, Ark and took the trail, delivered the cattle, returned Oct. Oct 3 1862 Capt Williams was killed by Indians this caused a change in the business, the frontier was left without protection Hanna was orderd to remain on the frontier and assist in collecting beaves, and to assist in the protection of the frontier against Indians. During the War, was called out and made a march under Capt Mullen up the Concho, on South Concho, a very heavy sleet storm come on us come near freezing men and horses to death, this was soon after the battle between Confederate and Malisha troops under Capt Toteen etc

and the Kickapoo Indians, our force accomplished nothing. In the spring 1875, gathered up a herd of cattle Drove them to Kansas, the market was over done with Texas cattle, saved very little money. In 1892 suit was brot against Hanna by the John Williams Heirs, Docia Mankins et. als. for the recovery of the land which her own property (Martha Williams widow of the late John Williams) the was deeded to her by the Williams heirs forever, in the division of the estate, later she sold it to Hanna and after her death Williams heirs sued Hanna, for the land. Hanna recovered a Judgement to quiet Tittle and for his costs, but attys fees and expenses cost about $300.00
